What is Myofunctional Therapy?

A natural, exercise-based approach to improving oral function, breathing, and overall wellness.

The Basics

Myofunctional therapy is a series of guided exercises and habit training for the muscles of the tongue, lips, and face. By improving resting posture, swallow patterns, and nasal breathing, it supports better oral function and holistic well-being.

Why it Matters

  • When the mouth is open instead of the nose, it can affect facial growth, sleep, and overall health. Myofunctional therapy encourages nasal breathing patterns to improve oxygen intake, support healthy development, and promote restful sleep.

  • A tongue thrust swallow can interfere with speech, orthodontic results, and long-term dental stability. Therapy retrains the swallow and supports proper tongue posture, helping teeth and jaws remain aligned.

  • Muscle imbalance in the face and jaw often leads to clenching, discomfort, or TMJ issues. Therapy exercises reduce tension, improve muscle coordination, and complement dental or physical therapy care.

  • Poor oral posture and mouth breathing can contribute to snoring or disrupted sleep. Therapy helps optimize airway support and complements medical treatment for sleep-disordered breathing.

What Therapy Is - and Isn’t

Myofunctional therapy is educational and behavioral - a guided exercise program that retains oral and facial muscle patterns.

It is not a replacement for medical or dental treatment and does not diagnose conditions.
